âYes, maâam, can I help you?â The voice came from behind a counter that reached about nine inches taller than standard kitchen height.
âHi, Iâm here to see Amy Stewart. She should be expecting me.â
The womanâs rosy cheeks quivered slightly as her head bobbed up and down. âYes. Amy told me to expect you.â A pudgy hand pointed to CJâs right. âIf youâll come to the door at the end of the counter Iâll take you to her.â
Through a small maze of desks the two women wove their way until they reached a closet-sized office with glass windows on three sides. CJ made sure her internal recorder captured every detail of the workspace. Next to Amyâs office sat a much larger office. Glass fronted bookcases lined the entire back wall. These overlooked a rather untidy desk and standard office furniture.
âAmy, here is the lady you told me to expect.â
Amy raised her head from the computer screen. âThanks, Dorothy. Catherine, come on in. Please shut the door behind you. Iâm almost ready. Just give me a couple of minutes.â
CJ remained standing as Amyâs slender fingers flew over the numerical ten-key on her computer keyboard. She scanned computer print outs as she worked without words.
In the office next door sat a woman dressed in a dark tailored suit. With her head down, the makings of a double chin became obvious. Collar length frosted hair looked unusually blond under the glow of florescent office lights. She busied her diamond encrusted fingers by dissecting a stack of newspapers. Only one or two pages of each remained on her desk as the remainder slipped into a wastepaper basket. A black ledger book lay closed on her desk.
âThere,â said Amy. âAll finished. Do you want to go next door and meet Mrs. Shipley now?â
CJ maintained her gaze on the woman in the adjoining office. She must have felt the stare. Up came her head and the two women exchanged cordial yet quick nods of greeting. âNo, Amy. Iâve seen all I need to see. Iâll let David introduce me to Charlene at the reunion. I doubt sheâll recognize me. I wore jeans and pulled my hair back into a pony tail on purpose. Besides, she looks absorbed in what sheâs doing.â CJ turned her head. âIs it my imagination, or are you the only woman in this office that doesnât have a serious weight problem?â
âYou noticed, did you? I guess itâs because Iâm a CPA who is willing to work for peanuts and I only work half a day. Mrs. Shipley has this thing about wanting to be the thinnest woman in the office. She dresses to the nines and wears the most expensive jewelry youâve ever seen. She only hires, shall we say, full-figured women.
âDid you notice that the glass on my office has a reflective film on it? I keep my door shut when Iâm here and nobody can see in, except Mrs. Shipley. Thereâs an exit just around the corner. Thatâs the one I use.
